17th Annual Licking County Prayer Breakfast

This year’s program features keynote speaker Judy Martz. A Montana native, Governor Judy Martz was born in the small community of Big Timber, Montana, to ranching parents. Her love of rural life, the outdoors, and competition led her to first become Miss Rodeo Montana and then a member of the 1963 U.S. World Speed Skating Team and a member of the U.S. Olympic Team at the 1964 Winter Games.

Her desire to help others and to serve her beloved Montana led Judy Martz to spearhead the development and construction of the U.S. High Altitude Sports Center in Butte, Montana, and to work tirelessly creating programs to benefit others all while running' a small business with her husband Harry. Her service to the public culminated in her election as the first female Lieutenant Governor of Montana when she ran on the Republican ticket with Governor Marc Racicot in 1996. Four years later when Governor Racicot left office and became the Chairman of President George W. Bush's Re-election Committee, Judy Martz was elected the first female Governor of Montana and took over leadership of the State of Montana in 2001.

During the 2001 Legislative Session, she held the line on over $100 million in new spending to manage the state’s budget in a fiscally responsible manner. This commitment paid off. When elected, the state faced the largest budget deficit in its history. Due to the leadership of the Governor and the support of the State Legislature, Montana was able to boast the largest surplus in the states history when Governor Martz left office.

As Governor her priorities included creating and retaining good paying job opportunities for all Montanans, addressing appropriate tax reform policies in the state, and improving the education funding system for Montana's public schools.

In addition to serving the public, Governor Martz strives to better the lives of those around her. In 1994, Judy Martz donated one of her kidneys to her ailing sister and after being elected Lieutenant Governor created and chaired the Governor's Council on Organ Donor Awareness, an organization that has dramatically increased organ-donorship in the state and saved many lives.

When she is not involved in her numerous civic activities, you will find Judy spending quality time with her husband Harry, son Justin, daughter Stacey with son-in-law Abe, and the love of her life, granddaughter Remy.
